DirectX 12 Ultimate was a surprise from Microsoft. We already told you at the time all the keys to the important updating that Microsoft made within its well-known API, and we also explained that with this movement the giant of Redmond had carried out an important approach in favor of the unification of developments for PC and Xbox Series X, its next-generation console that, as we know, will arrive later this year.

Among the most interesting innovations that DirectX 12 Ultimate brings is the integration, natively, of the advanced function set that the API originally had, such as ray tracing (DirectX RayTracing or DXR), the shader Variable rate shading (VRS), mesh shaders and sample feedback.

The ray-tracing needs no introduction, we know that aims to recreate lighting effects, reflections, and shadows realistically, even at the cost of consumption of important resources. For its part, the variable rate shader intelligently analyzes each scene to adjust the shading load based on the proximity to the center of each element, thereby reducing the workload without appreciating a loss of image quality.

The shaders mesh analyzed in real time the scene to determine which items should have a greater geometric load and which not. It is similar to the variable rate shader, but it applies to geometry and not shaders. Finally, we have the sampling feedback, which reuses information from shaders and improves the loading of high-quality textures.

Last Game Ready and Studio Controllers has released NVIDIA are the first to offer full support for Microsoft DirectX 12 Ultimate, and turns the GeForce RTX series 20 in the first and only graphics cards that support, today, all characteristics of said API, a situation that will not change until AMD launches the RX 6000, based on the RDNA 2 architecture.

These new drivers also take advantage of hardware-accelerated GPU programming, a new feature that we already had the opportunity to tell you about in this article, and that was included in the Windows 10 May 2020 Update. Thanks to this feature, graphics cards can play video and perform calculations in video games with direct control of their video memory, which improves performance and can help reduce latency.

The new drivers give full support to DirectX 12 Ultimate and have also extended the support of G-Sync technology to a considerable number of monitors that you will find listed below:

  • AOC AG273F1G8R3.
  • ASUS VG276AQL1A.
  • Dell S2421HGF.
  • Lenovo G24-10.
  • LG 27GN950, LG 32GN50T / 32GN500.
  • Samsung 2020 Odyssey G9.
  • Samsung 2020 Odyssey G7 27 ”.
  • Samsung 2020 Odyssey G7 32 ”.

You can now download the new drivers through the official NVIDIA website. Please note that ray tracing is only feasible on RTX 20 series as they have dedicated hardware to accelerate such technology. In those graphics cards that lack such hardware, the performance is so poor that the user experience is dire.
